Los Angeles Park Rangers

The Park Rangers and Park Patrol Officers Need Help

The 2008/09 City ofLos Angeles Budget proposes cutting half of the City’s Park Rangers.

Cuts include 17 field Rangers, the Chief Park Ranger position, clerical staff and as-needed employees in Dispatch and Fire Patrol*

PROJECTED IMPACTS

  • Elimination of Ranger patrols projected in 9 of the 11 Regional Parks
  • Elimination of the Ranger fire patrol covering fire-prone Regional parks
  • Elimination of the Park Ranger Mounted unit
  • Increases in serious crime and “quality of life violations

 INFORMATION

Park Rangers are certified law enforcement officers who provide public safety/assistance services and law enforcement in eleven large Regional parks such as Hansen Dam, Sepulveda Basin, Griffith and Elysian parks.

Rangers respond to fires, rescues, law enforcement problems, medical incidents and equestrian accidents and work closely with the LAPD and the Office of Public Safety. Rangers also operate eight pieces of fire-fighting apparatus under a mutual aid agreement with the Los Angeles Fire Department.

In 2007, Rangers:

  • Handled approximately 26,000 incidents (enforcement or safety-related),
  • Assisted 50,000 visitors
  • Provided interpretive/naturalist services to 20,000 visitors.
  • Received 29,200 phone calls at the Ranger Dispatch Center
  • Handled 10,661 incidents at the Ranger Dispatch Center

The bottom line---- Rangers handled approximately 26,000 law enforcement and safety-related incidents in 2007. If the Ranger Division is cut in half, many of these incidents will need to be referred to and handled by other agencies such as LAPD at a greater cost.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Contact your Council Office and ask them to restore these 19 essential Park Ranger positions. The promise of maintaining public safety requires a strong Ranger presence in our Regional Parks!

*Recreation and Parks was in the process of filling some of these positions in 2007/08. RAP has provided equivalent staffing for the vacancies through the use of overtime funding and funding for as-needed employees, pending filling these vacancies. This will be lost in the 2008/09 budget – these cuts are actual service/staffing cuts.
